THE PRETTY little village of Carlby lies between Stamford and Bourne just off the A6121 in the district of South Kesteven in Lincolnshire.
This picturesque village, with a history dating back to Saxon times, has a mix of attractive properties both ancient and modern. There are now around 200 houses in the village, home to about 560 people. A painted, carved oak village sign is erected on the village green. It depicts local features and events including the church, the Mallard steam locomotive (it’s record breaking run in 1938 ran through the Parish of Carlby), and horses with a plough.
Carlby is a thriving community with various associations including a Women’s Institute, Bowls Club and a Walking Club. There is a playing field, children’s play park and a tennis court. For those with youngsters, there is a Mums and Tots group. Carlby also has a village hall in the High Street where many events and meetings are held.
Located in a peaceful corner of the village is St. Stephen’s Church. This Anglican parish church is built in the Early English style and it is believed to originate from around 1200.
The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book 1086 as Carleby.
